The Ministry of Education (MEC) has announced that it will conduct a national study in the first half of 2026 to evaluate the effects of Law No. 15,100/2025, which restricts the use of cell phones in Brazilian schools. The law marks its first year in effect on January 13, 2026, and aims to reduce distractions and reinforce focus on educational activities.
According to the ministry, the study aims to understand how the law is being implemented by school systems and what impacts it has had on the school environment. Key aspects to be analyzed include students’ attention in class, peer interactions, and the dynamics of pedagogical practices, as well as the challenges schools face in adapting to the new rule.
The study will encompass a range of educational settings nationwide, taking into account regional differences and examining both public and private schools. The data gathered is intended to inform improvements in public education policy and guide future decisions regarding the use of digital technologies in schools.
Education Minister Camilo Santana positively assessed the initial results of the measure. According to him, the restriction on cell phone use has helped reduce distractions during class and strengthened students' social interaction, fostering more in-person communication and relationships within the school environment.
The report also includes insights from families and the school community. Their accounts suggest that, despite initial adaptation challenges, the change has led to more student interaction, with increased conversations, play, and friendships beyond the screen.
